As some people might argue (and with good cause), spring training games are not that important, if at all. To some players they are, but to the experienced ones, it's just a tune up for the regular season, and they are just focusing on fine tuning their performance. Case in point was back in spring training in 2000 when the Boston Red Sox threw a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays, thanks to the efforts of six Boston pitchers. Something tells me you might not remember that.

The Baltimore Orioles cut three players, including backup catcher Craig Tatum, to reduce their roster to the 25-man limit. Tatum and pitcher Zach Britton were optioned to Triple-A Norfolk and infielder Brendan Harris was assigned Tuesday to the minor league camp. The Orioles also placed right-hander Justin Duchscherer (hip strain) on the 15-day disabled list.

Max Scherzer managed to find one positive aspect about his final spring training performance: It won't mean a thing by the end of the week. Luke Scott homered twice off Scherzer and drove in seven runs to carry the Baltimore Orioles over the Detroit Tigers 14-9 on Monday. Scherzer yielded 12 runs, 11 earned, in 2 1-3 innings.

Veteran pitchers Mark Hendrickson, David Riske and Rick VandenHurk were designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. Left fielder Nolan Reimold, infielder Nick Green and pitchers Ryan Drese, Clay Rapada and Pat Egan were assigned to Baltimore's minor league camp. In addition, outfielder Randy Winn asked for his unconditional release and the Orioles complied.

Ricky Romero, Toronto's opening-day pitcher, ended his spring the same way he started it, getting knocked around, giving up runs and getting frustrated. On Sunday, Baltimore tagged him for eight hits and five runs in 5 1-3 innings before the Blue Jays rallied to beat the split-squad Orioles 9-5. Toronto's Rajai Davis went 5 for 5 with two doubles and a triple and scored three times.
